You have rights! If you experience discrimination or a bias incident, you have options in making a report. The first step is understanding your rights. Below are resources compiled by AAPI Montclair, which do not serve as an endorsement. If you have any suggestions, email us at info@aapimontclair.org.
NJ Division on Civil Rights Know Your Rights Webinar: The NJ Division on Civil Rights is a state agency that enforces NJ’s anti-discrimination laws. AAPI Montclair co-hosted a webinar with the NJ Division on Civil Rights (DCR) about recognizing and responding to bias incidents. Learn about what constitutes a bias incident under the law and ways to report it. It also features a conversation about racialized trauma by Jessica Cho Kim, a conversation with youth leaders, and a racial justice healing meditation facilitated by Dr. Kani Illangovan.
The New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (LAD) is one of the most comprehensive anti-discrimination laws in the country. You can make a report online here.
Below are ways to report incidents to national AAPI organizations. The goals of these reporting resources are to compile incidents and use them to help inform advocacy and policy efforts. They are not shared with law enforcement or government agencies.
The above information is not a comprehensive list of resources. These are projects, trainings, and conversations that AAPI Montclair members have taken part in.
